For this purpose, questions such as what is the brightness level and dimensions of the space, what atmosphere is desired, and the most appropriate choices should be made with the help of the answers obtained.
The power of color
The colors that emerge as a result of the concentration of light frequency in a certain proportion affect human psychology and behaviors with the low or high vibrational energy they contain. The psychological effects of colors affect human mental activities, physical performance, psycho social status, and play an important role in the human-hardware-environment system. According to the amount of light reflected by a color, it speaks of a “value”, a “tone” of the same color family that differs in terms of value and saturation, but with close affinities, and a “saturation” according to its visual intensity and purity. These three variables that describe color play an important role in the perception of interior space. In other words, in a place that is the same as everything else, only very different atmospheres can be created by changing colors and even tones. (1) Sağocak M.D. (2005), p. 77-78
Navy blue; It refers to infinity, authority and efficiency. It also inspires confidence in people because it symbolizes robustness. If this color, which causes the space to be perceived smaller than it is to be used on large surfaces, the kitchen should be large and bright. However, if the kitchen is small or receives little light, the dark and dark effect it can create can be mitigated by combining it with a light color such as white or gray.
Blue; evokes feelings of freshness, coolness and comfort. Its light tones give relief and provide a greater perception of the space than it is. However, it can create a gloomy environment when used on large surfaces.Studies have shown that blue color reduces the feeling of eating as opposed to red. Therefore, it is not a recommended color to use alone in the kitchen. Different combinations can be created using colors such as dark blue, white, light gray, light brown with blue, beech wood or metal.
Vivid shades of orange energize. Terra level and peach tones add warmth to the space. This color can be used in large areas. It is also one of the most preferred colors to emphasize details after yellow. Orange blends particularly with white, light yellow, cream and gray. It creates a nice combination when used with wood or metal as a material.
Purple; activates self-confidence. Lavender with lighter shades, lilac and orchids give relief. Dark tones are not very suitable for large surfaces, but are ideal as accent colors. It can be used in combination with purple, bright and eye-catching colors. As a material, it is compatible with steel, chrome and light wood.
It is known that green has a relaxing effect that gives confidence and peace. It is the main color of country style kitchens, as it evokes nature. While there is no classification for light shades, it is recommended to use dark shades in certain regions and in small amounts. In a kitchen dominated by green color, floor covering can be made of wood. It also harmonizes with stone, brick and mat. When it is desired to be combined with another color, cream, white or caramel can be preferred as the second color.
It is known to everyone that red increases appetite. For this reason, the emblems of many fastfood companies are designed in red. In addition, using a certain amount of red in the space will energize. However, it can be uncomfortable on large surfaces. Therefore, it should be tried to be combined with other colors and materials. A nice harmony can be achieved by using red, white, black, gray, orange colors or steel and chrome.
Yellow; It is one of the most preferred colors in the kitchen. Gives soft tones and evokes positive emotions. It was observed that especially lighter tones make people happy. The bright yellow highlights the details that are desired to attract attention and illuminates the space. However, this tone can be uncomfortable when used in large quantities. Compatible with steel, chrome and glass, this color can also be combined with gray, white and black. In addition to its aesthetic value, yellow can also be used functionally. Especially in the kitchens of people with vision problems, the handles can be made in yellow and contrast can be created with lids. In this way, the handles are more easily detected.
White color, which is the most popular choice for kitchens due to its clean appearance, creates a sense of hygiene and freshness on people. It also provides greater perception of the space. If it is used with other colors, it increases the effects by reflecting other colors. For example; If the cabinets are bright red in a kitchen with white walls, the general space will be perceived as a light rose color. The biggest disadvantage of white kitchens is that it creates a cold feeling. However, this effect can be reduced by using natural materials such as wood or colors such as yellow, orange, and green.
Black evokes mystery emotions. It is also a symbol of elegance, fun and wealth. Black has the feature of balancing excesses. Using with other colors will reveal that color more. Black makes large spaces feel smaller and mysterious. If kitchen cabinets are preferred as black and this color is spread throughout the space, it should be preferred to use very light colors such as cream, white or gray on the floor, wall and counter.Black can be used not only in kitchen cabinets, countertops and floors, but also in movable furniture such as various accessories, lighting elements and seating units. Especially, the application of black regionally in a kitchen in vibrant colors will provide a color balance in the space and make the other color stand out more.
